At the Pub With… is a new video series from the Contemporary Art Society, inviting contemporary artists to pull up a chair and join us for informal chats at The Lady Ottoline in Bloomsbury.
Filmed in an area closely associated with the Society’s own origins, the series aims to create space for candid, open-ended discussions around artistic practice, process, and the conditions that shape contemporary art today. Each episode brings viewers to the table with leading and emerging artists, offering insight into the ideas, references and lived experiences that inform their work.
In keeping with the Contemporary Art Society’s commitment to supporting living artists and expanding public access to contemporary art, At the Pub With… raises a glass to conversation as a route into understanding how art is made, circulated and encountered today.
Our second episode features Michael Landy CBE, RA (London, b.1963, UK). Known for his conceptually-rooted work that often softly critiques or playfully challenges dominant systems, whether capitalism, consumer culture or religious iconography. Studying at Goldsmiths in the late 1980s, Landy’s work came to prominence when shown at the now historic Freeze exhibition at London’s docklands in 1988. Landy’s works are held in public institutions internationally, including the Tate Collection, London; the Arts Council, England; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Centre Pompidou, Paris.
Last year Landy’s ‘Multi-Saint’ (2013), a kinetic sculpture representing St Catherine, St Lucy, St Peter Martyr, St Lawrence and St Michael, along with their identifying symbols, was acquired for Walker Art Gallery as part of Contemporary Art Society’s Collection Fund at Frieze.
