The Roberts Institute of Art (RIA) is a non-profit contemporary arts organisation. They commission pioneering performance art, run a residency programme in Scotland, collaborate with national partners on exhibitions, and work to research and share the David and Indrė Roberts Collection. Founded in 2007 as the David Roberts Art Foundation (DRAF) and re-launched as the Roberts Institute of Art in 2021, their work spans over 15 years of supporting contemporary art across the UK and beyond.
Since 2021, RIA has collaborated with over 25 museums and cultural organisations and commissioned over 80 artists, choreographers, musicians, dancers and performers to present new performances to live audiences. Partnerships include with Sheffield Museums, the Hunterian (Glasgow), Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, The Courtauld, Hastings Contemporary, Fitzrovia Chapel, the ICA London and The Hepworth Wakefield to reach audiences across the UK through their exhibition and performance programme.
The David and Indrė Roberts Collection features nearly 2,500 works by over 900 artists, dating from the mid-20th century to today. International in scope, the collection focuses on modern and contemporary works spanning a variety of disciplines and media, including sculpture, painting, photography, video and installation.
As part of their aim to share the collection and make it accessible to as broad an audience as possible they welcome requests to borrow individual or multiple works. Since 2021, they have loaned close to 300 works from the David and Indrė Roberts Collection to over 50 institutions worldwide.
They have established the RIA Loan Network to support curators and institutions in accessing the collection. This is a quarterly mailout offering updates on recent acquisitions, artist spotlights and thematic insights.
